Am I Crazy?
Tonight, we had a local ministry partner, his wife and 2 daughters over to look at some of our stuff and share a meal together. It was a nice visit. While they were here they noticed that I was still limping some from my knee injury. The physical therapy did help a lot, but my left knee is still very sore by the time the sun goes down. They HIGHLY suggested I go visit a friend of theirs who is a Chinese Medicine doctor who does accupuncture. This is a couple who lived in the States for 3 or 4 years while attending seminary. Both of daughters were born in America and they are very familiar with Western Medicine...but they really think this doctor could help me. Now, I am seriously considering it. I hate the pain in my knee. It doesn't kill me, but it keeps me from being able to go as strong as I would like. So, what do you think...should I give it a try this week? It is only going to cost me about $10 because the man gives a missionary/pastoral discount! Am I crazy for thinking about going in there and giving it a shot. I want your opinion...so PLEASE comment!!

I never know what to do/think in situations like this. So many Asian people use traditional Chinese medicine--it seems to work for them.

But, the roots of acupuncture are in religion--one I don't agree with. So, for me, because acupuncture is based in Taoist religious principles--even if effective--I avoid it. (below I quoted some diffrent pages trying to show/explain what I mean about it's history/principles/philosophy).

I once accidently went to a TCM doctor. We were visiting in a different city and were just looking for the innsurance sign on a building--we couldn't read the clinic's name.

He felt my wrists and told me I had a bad ear infection. He then gave me several weeks of herbs to take. He never examined me anywhere else--never looked in my ear.

When I left, I felt "weird." There are times when I have sensed the presence of spirits--going into temples is an example of when I've felt this before. This was another one of those times. After I left his office, I had several missionairies pray with me. I wanted nothing to do with him or his medicine.

I am not telling you to go or not go. I am just suggesting you examine the principles behind acupuncture and pray about it with your husband whether this is a wise decision or not.

"Acupuncture is used to regulate or correct the flow of 'qi' (energy) to restore health."

"Oriental medicine and traditional Chinese medicine are based upon the general principle that illness results from disharmony, such as disharmony between the internal organs or disharmony with the environment, and that health can be restored by harmonizing the internal physiology, promoting circulation in the organs and tissues of the body, and achieving balance with the environment."

"Acupuncture is rooted in the Daoist [Taoist] philosophy of change, growth, balance and harmony and this text outlines the principles of natural law and the movements of life—yin and yang, the Five Elements, the organ system and the meridian network along which acupuncture points are located."

"The principal aim of acupuncture in treating the whole person is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual."

I don't know that much about accupuncture personally, but I do know Christians who use it (my daughter's m-i-l being one, and she is a pastor's wife).

If it were me, I'd probably look at some of the sites that were given in the above comment. It would be informative to find out the philosophy of healing behind accupuncture.

What does your husband think about it?

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your knee, but by reading how busy you've been with packing, I am sure that's not helping. : ( I will be praying that Lord would strengthen your knee and help the pain...and for wisdom in making a decision regarding the accupuncture. : )
